African Chicken Pox

Le 9 janvier   I’m not quite sure what the problem is – maybe someone added sugar to the water we bathe in, maybe muzungus are all the latest rage for mosquitos. Whatever it is, it’s a problem.

Four or so days ago I woke up with a string of five mosquito bites on my leg. (In a 1x3 inch proximity, mind you.) I thought, ah, there must have been a mosquito that got caught under my covers. I’ll live. That was just the beginning. The strangest thing is that I don’t actually see any mosquitos around, so they must just be pretty sneaky.

The worst part, too, is that for some reason (and this could very well be a figment of my imagination), mosquito bites are itchier here. So now I’m covered in no less than thirty mosquito bites and I feel like a six year-old who can’t resist scratching the chicken pox. Better yet, I think of one of Gram’s slogans (I’ll just let that one be for those who are in the know).

I swear by the end of the week I’ll have run out of this tube of hydrocortisone cream. (Though luckily I packed a few because, hey… it’s Africa.) And I can’t tell if it just doesn’t work on African mosquito bites or if the whole thing is a placebo effect and the itch goes away because if you do scratch the cream will get rubbed off. I think someone should look into this.

  2. Hi Laura, I have just finished reading all of your blogs. You are an amazing writer! It feels as if I am right there with you, seeing, hearing, experiencing, and enjoying all your exciting and wonderful adventures. [Except for those sneaky mosquitoes, I even itch.] I love you and pray that your bites heal quickly. Aunt Judy
PS Speaking of new experiences, as you can see from my previous attempt,I am new at posting comments. Here's hoping I do not accidentally remove this one.
