Le premier octobre, le premier jour.
October 1, 2010
First morning waking up in Rwanda. I woke to childrens’ voices – singing, laughing, NOT indoor voices – loving life. [at 6h30]
The sun is streaming in through the two windows in my room in Kigali – hoping I’m lucky enough to have this in Gisenyi. I’m excited to start our journey to Gisenyi today. 3 hour cab ride from Kigali all the way (circuitously, as that’s the way the roads were built) to Gisenyi on the western border. I can’t wait to see this tour, as I was not expecting to see it by daylight.
And today is Friday.. so we’ll get back mid-day Friday and school won’t start again until Monday, which means I have a few days to settle in and get used to the house, the sisters, RWANDA.
It’s strange, too.. I’m not one of those hypochondriacs or paranoid people, but still I feel as though I’ll worry about a whole lot more while I’m here. At least the first month or two. A bug bite?? A rash?! Even something like a paper cut could potentially concern me. But that’s because you’re told all these horror stories, and warned about everything – from the water, the bugs, certain types of food.
But I’m ready. And so excited. I get to be here for almost a full 8 months. Lucky girl. : )
