le 7 octobre If you know me well (especially if we met somewhere other than in high school), you know how excited I get when someone asks me where I’m from. It opens the floodgates. Here, friends will ask me which state I am from, and I am able to create for them an image of what my tiny little state is all about.
Everyone worldwide knows of New York, even if they couldn’t find it on a map, and many know about Boston. I get to tell people all about how even though I’m only 3-4 hours from NY, their sports teams rival mine – the ones from New England. I get to explain how Rhode Island is even smaller than Rwanda – they love that. We have both beaches and lakes, and it’s completely covered in snow in the winter. In Autumn, the leaves turn brilliant shades of red, yellow, and orange and then fall to the ground.
I’ve been realizing recently, too, that I have a tendency to be drawn to small places with access to water. Fairfield? Jamaica? Switzerland? Rwanda? And the ones outside of the US are all in or near the mountains. It’s merely a strange coincidence, but I find it quite amusing!
