Le 12 janvier Upon arrival here in Kigali, I was assigned a few projects to complete during my time here. One of them is the house library. I started categorizing books and entering them into the computer in October, but as soon as the “Cours d’Anglais” started up, directly followed by the holidays, I’ve not had any time to work on it.
Well, now the school year has started again and that means we’re back on a regular schedule. I finally have time to finish what I was… WAIT a minute, there are more books hidden here in this cabinet. And in this one! And, AH! This place is just hiding a mess that’s been accumulating over the last three years!
Oh no no no – this is way more than organizing books now. It seems as though each person who has come through this house has left a box of STUFF in the corner of the library and said “well, just in case…” The room is filled with books, photos, movies, music media, technology, arts and crafts…. You name it, you can find it in this library.
Well, I’m not quite sure they expected me to be organizing quite like I am, but I know for one thing that they didn’t know who they were asking. If you know my father, you know he’s organized. He fills his Saturdays with recreation – one Saturday he’ll organize the garage, another he’ll organize the cellar, another he’ll…. Everything has a place, probably with a label, and it’s all gone through every few months to make sure we’re not holding onto anything we might not need.
And I’m his carbon copy, in this and many other ways. Uh oh.
I started by completely gutting the cabinets and drawers and putting them in boxes – stuff to give away, stuff to burn (literally, that’s what we do our trash), stuff to go to the school, stuff that needs to be looked through by someone because it looks important because it has no place in this library. I put a utensil tray in the arts and crafts drawer and put the pencils, pens, rulers, and scissors there. I put labels on the drawers to tell everyone what belongs there.
Head to toe, this place is getting a makeover. My one hope is that I can get it so organized that the others will have no choice but to keep it in order because everything is so clearly labeled.
They clearly had no idea who they were asking.
