Le 15 fevrier Rwanda’s landscape is known for its rolling and marvelous hills. This feature is so much a part of the country that it has been nicknamed “Land of a Thousand Hills.”
However, this is not quite accurate. Rwanda’s topographical map must look like color-by-number. Driving along the road from the center of the country to Ruhengeri in the Northern Province, one can easily get overwhelmed in trying to count the number of hills.
Hill behind hill behind hill is quite a remarkable sight on its own, but when the Rwandan mist settles along the skyline, it’s hard to look away. Before coming here myself, I’d seen a few pictures that showed the blue-gray montage of hills, but doubted that such beauty could exist. FALSE. It is real, and such splendor is a daily occurrence. Try as you may taking pictures, the Kodak falls far short of this “feast for the eyes.”
My parents, as incredulous about nature as I am, found it impossible to not marvel at the new views at each turn in the road, ooh-ing and aah-ing.
“Land of a thousand hills is right!” my dad exclaimed.
“John, I’m sure it’s much more like ten thousand,” replied Jeremiah, laughing.
